Geisha coffee originates from a coffee forest in southwestern Ethiopia called Gesha. Because Gesha sounds similar to the Japanese word "Geisha," it was chosen as the name. The spellings are similar in both languages: Gesha, Geisha, and geisha.
This coffee variety was brought from Ethiopia to Panama in Central America in the early 20th century. Because Geisha trees were not very productive and were relatively tall, they were planted alongside coffee plantations to serve as windbreaks for other coffee trees. However, in 2004, a coffee farm called Hacienda La Esmeralda entered its Geisha coffee in the BoP Panama Coffee Competition and received exceptional reviews. This catapulted Geisha to international attention and garnered widespread attention. Subsequently, Geisha ceased its use as a windbreak and became a globally sought-after, premium coffee variety, frequently fetching high prices at auction.
Geisha coffee is known for its distinct aromas of flowers, jasmine, citrus, and tropical fruits. Its flavor is fresh and complex, with prominent sweetness and acidity, and it is considered a coffee with great layering and depth.
